Curriculum:
International Mid Pac College
offers a dynamic, communicative-based curriculum that balances fluency and
accuracy. Grounded in communicative language teaching and cooperative
learning, the IMPAC curriculum emphasizes authentic communication in a comfortable
and relaxed atmosphere.
Moreover, the curriculum aims
to improve the students' language and cross-cultural communication skills as
well as their confidence to use these skills appropriately in professional,
social and academic settings.
The IEPP curriculum is based on three
fundamental requirements as set forth by the Teachers of English to Speakers of
Other languages (TESOL, 2003, p. 20): 1) the mission and philosophy of the
program, 2) the needs and goals of the learners and 3) the ongoing process for
curriculum revision in response to changes in the needs and goals of its
learners. In addition to these fundamental requirements, the IEPP curriculum
strives to maintain the curriculum standards advocated by TESOL in its 2003
publication ¡°Standards for Adult Education ESL Programs.¡± These standards
require the curriculum to include ¡°the goals, objectives, outcomes, approaches,
methods, activities, materials, technological resources and evaluation measures
that are appropriate for learners in multilevel classes¡± (TESOL, 2003, p.
20).
Based on these standards, IMPAC has
designed a communicative theme-based curriculum for the Intensive English
Proficiency Program (IEPP). Communicative language teaching (CLT) emphasizes
authentic communication, learning through practice, and group work. The
theme-based approach contextualizes learning, which is known to increase
motivation, retention, and the development of academic literacy.
Along with CLT, the curriculum stresses Cooperative Learning (CL)
in which all students are encouraged to work together on an equal basis to
accomplish learning tasks. According to Johnson, Johnson and Holubec
(1993), this technique is invaluable in improving self-esteem and the enjoyment
of school and multicultural relationships.
These sound research
based approaches and methodologies are appropriate for IMPAC students, the
majority of whom have stronger reading skills and grammatical knowledge than
communication skills. While reading
comprehension and grammatical, form based learning are still a large part of
the learning process in the IEPP, fluency based communicative activities are
given more weight to help students develop the vocabulary and pronunciation
they need to communicate fluently in English.
The IEPP schedule is
based around a core listening speaking class which lasts for two hours on
Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
Facilitating this core class are additional classes on pronunciation,
vocabulary/idioms, grammar and writing/reading.
In addition, in the
IEPP for Teachers, advanced learners study TESOL methodology to increase their understanding of language acquisition
and modern approaches and methods in second language education.
